Funny how you live your life by one creed and then find yourself saying the exact opposite later. When my kids would ask me about something my reply was that it was possible, but not probable. It would look like this: "Mom, can we go to Disney next month?". My reply would be that it was possible but not probable. Little did I know that I was training them to play it safe in life and steer clear of possibility.
In possibility, we acknowledge that something could happen but we have no clue as to how it will come to be. As a generality, we don't like not knowing. It makes us look bad and we never want to look bad. We stay nice and safe in Probabilitiville. We know how things will go there- it is the same way that it has gone for however many years and we find a sense of comfort there.
And now here is the contradiction- our humanness loves ritual and sameness but our Human Spirit craves something more. Now you get to choose which is more important to you. Are you comfortable and content with everything in your life or business as it is right now or do you want something more, something that you have never had? Go on...I'll wait...choose. Nothing is wrong with either one. Your life and your choice.
OK- then off we go, returning to Land of What's Possible. I say returning to because we once lived here. It was likely when you were a child before someone who lived in Probabilitiville told you that something wasn't possible. When you think of what is possible, think outrageous stuff. Willy Wonka and Dr. Seuss comes to mind for me: chocolate rivers and a night in Na-Nupp where the birds are asleep and three moons are up. Don't get caught up in how it can be- just let the idea of it be. Like or not we can't single-handedly know everything, but if we started talking about the idea of chocolate rivers long enough, someone out there is bound to know how to do it or at the very least want to figure a way to create it with you. Yeah, I know- talk about chocolate rivers and three moons in the sky and people are going to think that you're nuts. Well I've got news for you, there is at least one person in the world that already thinks that about you and Chicago has already found a way to make their river green for St. Patrick's Day! Now down to business.
Think about what could be possible for your life or your business. Since we already got the wacky notions out there, complete with Oompaloompas or whatever outrageousness that you came up with, it is easier to see what is possible for you. Here's where that confronting question "What do I want" likes to pop up. Don't get caught up in the how of it no matter how tempting it is. Just let the idea of it be for now. Could you be in love? Could you double your sales? Could you actually be inspired about life again? Could you break into a new market? Could you start singing at the jazz club on Sunday nights with that quartet?
How would you need to be for you to have that? Would you need to humble, confident, vulnerable? What would you need to do in order to have that idea actualized? If you already know what to do to have it, congratulations- GO GET IN ACTION! Find a coach or consultant that you can relate to and you will get that idea actualized faster and you will stay out of The Rut. If you have no idea of what to do in order to actualize the idea, perfect- START A CONVERSATION about it (a conversation does not exist in your head, those are thoughts). Talk to someone who already lives in the Land of What's Possible. They are more likely to listen to and support you than the residents of Probabilitiville. After all, the folks there have come to know you for a very long time and would hate to lose a resident.
My game? My game is to make Probabilitiville a ghost town and to live in, and contribute to, the thriving community of Land of What's Possible. It is here in Land of What's Possible that we will be able to change the probable course of our world- it is here that our world leaders will come from.
Now that my kids are older, they ask different questions. When they ask about whether they can make the honor roll, get that part in the play, career choices, colleges, or the possibility to make a change in the world, my answer is much different. Now we start talking about the actions to take to actualize what they want.
Note: You need not be a child or young adult to live in possibility- you only need to be breathing and have a desire. What do you desire?
