In starting my own business, I really had to confront myself and ask "What do I want"? Don't worry, if you and I ever work together I will ask you the same confronting question. One of the many facets that was there for me was that I want to not only be a part of a thriving community, but I wanted to contribute to and be part of the cause of that thriving community.
Great, so what is a community anyway? I have heard several times lately that folks do not feel that they are a part of any community. That they do not participate in any communities. LIARS! Ok, so maybe they aren't exactly lying but they aren't really being truthful either. Let's take another look...Community can be anything that you say that it is. I can say that I am a part of the Edmonds Business Owners community as I do own a business and it is located in the city of Edmonds. I can also say that I am an active participant in the Global community- anyone can lay claim to that one. 1. Are you alive? 2. Do you communicate with others that also live on planet Earth? Congrats Sweetheart, you are an active participant of the Global community! Now take another look in our life and see what communities that you belong to. It could be the parents of XYZ Elementary School or rock climber of the PacNW. If there is one that you currently do not belong to, but would like to, go talk to those people. Check them out.
For me, I am creating the possibility of a thriving local community. I believe that when we have a thriving local community it is then that we can broaden our sights and have a greater impact on a bigger scale. Check this out: if my very local Edmonds community is thriving beyond imagine, the concern of surviving is absent. This allows for other concerns. Bigger concerns. Concerns worthy of the awesomeness that we really are. If I am not worrying about how to pay my mortgage, payroll, other overhead expense, etc., then I can be concerned about homeless youth on our streets in Seattle or ending poverty in Kenya by sponsoring a child to graduate high school there.
Now, I am not talking about just moving the concern- like pretending that the original concern isn't really there. The mortgage is NOT going to pay itself and the bank WILL come a knockin. I am talking about making sure that these things are a non-issue. After taking a look around, this just isn't going to happen all on its own. Small business owners already know this. If you don't, clue in here and watch your business expand! It takes somebody to be a stand for that to happen- to say "This is important to me" and then do something about it.
So over the next few months, just in time for the holiday season, I will be mentioning some of my fav fab local businesses and what it is that I love about them. Who knows, maybe we can create that thriving local community so that we can go on to make a huge impact somewhere else. Or at the very least, maybe we can get our shopping done by December 1st by finding something perfect for the fantastic people in our lives. It might just be possible for you to be turned on to some businesses out there that are about more than just the bottom line.
Warning: Shameless plugs for what I would love for Christmas will be included.
